The newly-enacted ban on ritual slaughter in parts of Belgium underscores a troubling trend in some European countries relative to the treatment of Jews and Muslims. While there may be a longstanding debate about the humane treatment of animals, the primary impetus for this ban, as well as others that are already in effect, may in fact be a sinister effort to curtail religious practice by way of legislation.
Inhibiting the ability of Jews and Muslims to engage in their timeworn traditions smacks of religious intolerance. With anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim animus on a frightening trajectory in Europe, governments cannot be allowed to fan the flames of racial hatred by instituting mandates that specifically target Jews and Muslims. People must be permitted to adhere to the tenets of their faith without fear of government reprisal. The international community needs to be candid and tell it like it is: this ban is not about safeguarding animals; it is about suppressing religious freedom.
